Hi, Our hen is sick and we need some help. I first saw her acting off when it was - 35 outside, she was all puffed up and shaking, so we took her into our garage were it was a bit warmer and she starded perking up, none of our other hens were acting like that though. When we were bringing the hens in for the night we brought her back out to the coop. The next morning she was still acting supper off so we brouggt her back in were she stayed for the next few days. She hadent layed an egg yet so i put two eggs from the coop with her incase that woukld help somhow. She started acting broody, she would not get off of her eggs and would get mad if we tryed to take them and if we placed an egg infront of her she ould carefully tuck it under her. So we brought her back out to the coop with a shallow box the sixe of there nesting boxes and put it in one of the corners of the coop so the hens would not bother her, but after that she stopped laying on them. This morning when we let the hens out she was acting super off, her comb was really pale, she was puffed up and really wobly and when she went to the bathroom it was all liqued . So we brought her back into our garage once again. She was one of our first hens and means so much to me as she is also one of my favrotes. i think that she is egg boud, but i may be wrong. Also the only wet that would take her is booking 3-4 weeks out and it is a sunday so it really is not an options. Please if you have any suggestions at all we will take them! thank you so much for reading all of this.

How old is she? It sounds like she is sick. Common problems in hens are reproductive disorders or infections, crop disorders, cancer, or parasites. Can you see any lice or mites on her skin under her vent and elsewhere? Offer some water, electrolytes, gatorade, or sugar water. Pouktry Cell or NutriDrench is also good. Sick birds may try some wet chicken feed mash or soft scrambled egg. You can insert a clean or gloved finger into her vent to feel for a stuck egg. Feel of her crop to see if it is empty and flat, full, puffy/soft, firm, or doughy. Is her tail down or up? Pictures of poop might help.

Thank you for this! She is almost a year old and doesn’t have mites or lice. Her tail is down but that only started today. I will take some photos later and give her egg and electrolytes. Thank you so much!

Amoxicillin dosage is 250 mg for a 5 pound chicken twice a day for 7-10 days. If you use the smz tmp, I would give 1/2 of a 400 mg tablet twice a day for 5 days.
