My husband was out of town, so it was up to me to take care of the girls. I let the girls out so they could get some fresh air and roam around. I went to dinner and came back. Closed the coop up not realizing that one was missing. Found her today hiding under our tractor. It has been rather cold during the day and night. Now, she has weak legs. How to help her?? Also, discovered that she has mites. So, that means the rest of them probably do as well. Any advice?? We need help. This is our first time raising chickens, they will be 2 in May. Thanks

What kind of mites? Are they on their body or are they the scaly leg mites? I personally always put diatomaceous earth in their dust bath to help prevent mites.

The mites are all over her. We gave her a bath in flea shampoo to get the caked on poop off of her and to see if it would help the mites. Powdered her with Seven dust. Got this info from another chicken site. Will have to thoroughly clean the coop with vinegar. We are switching to san instead of straw for them as well. She seems to be doing better this morning. We have her separate from our other girls.

Instead of using vinegar on the coop spray it down with Sevin. The spray gets into all the nooks and crannies where the mites like to hide. You need to retreat the coop and all the birds every 7 to 10 days until you stop seeing mites. That is their hatch cycle, so miss a few and you are right back where you started real quick. They can be hard to get rid of. You might also want to deworm your birds if you haven't already, worms can be a contributing factor to messy backsides.

She is doing so much better. We are going to keep her by herself for a couple of more days and slowly put her back in with the other girls. We are discontinuing using straw. My husband is going to build a new coop and run area for them(had already planned on doing this in the spring). Thanks for the advice.
