Hi guys. We have a Pawhut kit coop. But we are doubling the size of it this weekend, with fence pickets used as siding. we are also adding a large run made of treated 2x4's and welded fencing. What can I brush on the 3 types of wood to weatherproof it more? I don't want to make the chickens sick. If we only use it on the outside surfaces can they go back in for the night that day? What is a good product? I have never bought any weatherproofing stuff before. No idea what to get.

Paint! A good exterior paint of the color of your choice is your best bet. Ask for a exterior paint with primer and you will only need to give your coop 1 coat. The paint dries real fast so the chickens can be back just an hour or so after you finish! Another option is staining which looks great but tends to soak in the wood and does not create the barrier that you would get from paint.

I kind if thought of paint...maaaaaaaaaaaybe, but for now I kind of like the natural wood look. I am considering painting everything we make, and then leaving the kit coop (it's a cute little thing) natural color. Not sure yet. We might roof the run with that cheap fiberglass roofing, in a funky color. Paint could be fun.
Thanks!

Bumping this back up. I just bought white barn paint (latex, VERY thick) to re do our well cover. I have lots left over. Would there be any advantage to painting the inside of our homemade coop addition? Would that type of paint be harmful to chickens? We decided on a stain with sealer all in one product for the home made exterior. We chose a color that almost exactly matches the kit coop's existing stain job. We also got some in clear to recoat the Coop's exterior. Can't beat $4 a can at home depot's clearance rack. I'm just not sure what to do about the inside. I have some flooring that is not too slippery to at least make that more poo resistant.
