In the Brooder

Hi there!

I've read everything I can on the internet but want to see what the experts have to say on here. I have a week old Toulouse that has gotten more wobbly and unsteady on her feet in the last couple of days (Shirley). Her sibling (Laverne) seems to be just fine, getting stronger, and is a bit bigger than Shirley, always has been just a bit. I've added mealworms and Brewer's Yeast to their starter feed in case it's Niacin related (MannaPro non-medicated Gosling/Duck feed), though Laverne seems to be growing normally and isn't experiencing those symptoms. They're in the same brooder so either Laverne is taking all the Niacin out of their feed, or it's something else. I also added some Nutridrench to their water for a vitamin. I also read online that she may have a respiratory issue as she's breathing a bit heavy, so I put a little VetRX on her beak and head.

At this point I feel like I'm throwing the kitchen sink at her to make sure she's okay and lives through whatever is going on. The goslings are bonded and came together, and she is the most gentle sweetheart. She drinks and eats fairly normally, but is resting more than her sibling, and again just seems really unsteady on her feet. She'll stand up, then seems to fall over every so often and starts peeping/protesting that she did so. She does seem to lie down more than the other. Any thoughts on what it could be? I've attached some pictures so you can see size difference (Shirley on right), and any physical indicators that I may not be seeing.

How warm is the brooder? Goslings have a thick coat of down, and they can overheat. Make sure they can get away from e heat. I see red, so I'm guessing you are using a 250 watt bulb? Which is probably too hot this time of year. I use a 125 white light.

Yes a 250, It was half raised the first week to keep it around 90/95 degrees. But it is pretty hot. I will switch it out today. My thermometer broke and I'm also buying another today.

Do you think I've done irreparable damage to them? Or will they recover if I remedy it right away?

No sense worrying you did something wrong, :hugs , just lower the heat, and give them an area away from the heat and see how it goes. She still may have something wrong with her, but this is something you can try. If it's just too much heat it should improve over the next 24 hours.

Thank you so much. I'll see how she does. I appreciate your help!
