I went to get eggs and I found a rather large, soft, almost latex egg. It is way larger than normal. Now I understand that sometimes chickens lay a shell-less egg but this on is weird. Oddly enough they laid it in a puddle. I am wondering if maybe the shell dissolved in the puddle and it expanded. There is chicken poop in the water so....

Any input would be amazing. I will post pics as soon as I can

Typical of new layers, double yolks and softshells.....and a softshell is often laid in a strange place, it's softness makes it hard to 'control'.

Is it from a new layer?
Did you break it open and see what was inside?

Nothing to worry about unless it starts happening all the time.

They are not new layers. They are two years old...or two and a half. I haven't opened it yet, I probably will later.

Quote: Older hens either just coming back into lay after a molt, a winter off or getting ready to quit laying can also have funky eggs like that.
High production breeds usually only lay well for 2-3 years.
