Weird question, and I hope you can HELP!!!

If you start feeding treats you need to make sure to offer grit. If you keep them on straight chick starter its not needed.

Thanks! I was gonna start offering them some here shortly, so I might as well pick up some grit this morning since they have already eaten me out of house and home.....:o I tell you what, if my veggies would grow like they are, I wouldn't have to buy produce again. EVER!!

I just got 12 new babies (good grief, somebody STOP ME!!!) and 6 of them are Black sex-links. On their little black bodies, their crops are so big it looks like they have a bare spot in their down from their crops stretching out the area. (All of these mysterious bare spots are on their right sides just below their necks.) Anyway, you can see the white skin underneath and it scared me this morning. They can't be eating shavings because they are on dog potty pads and haven't been on shavings since they were in the store 2 days ago. Do anyone else's black babies do this?

Those little stinkers will go face down in the feeder and not come up for a long time. They are just a bunch of little piggies!

Then they just lay around waiting for it all to digest, I guess. They do spend time playing and seem happy tho, no distressed peeping or anything. So far, so good!

Thanks for posting this topic!! I was just about to do it myself.

I too thought that you were referring to your children and was thinking to myself, "Man, she really needs to contact a doctor instead of consulting people on a chicken forum!" Glad to hear that it's nothing major!

I, for one, am glad you asked the question. I wouldn't have known what was wrong either...and, now, I've learnt what a "crop" is..

I am not a chicken expert by any means, but I have never seen a bulging crop on my chicks, and I give them grit ( a homemade mixture of sand and tiny stones from my creekbed) from day 1. I don't know what's in chick starter, but perhaps they could still use a bit of grit early? In case they pick at other stuff in their cage or eat bugs or grass and such.

You know, I get that a lot about the whole kid thing. I was once talking to one of my friends on my cell and telling her how upset I was because I had to put down one of my kids, and she was my favorite little girl, and I missed her so much, etc. The woman behind me was staring at me like I had two heads or something, until I said that I was referring to my dog, then she had a moment of clarity. Seriously lady, like I would let a human kid lick my face, and not to mention the whole euthanasia thing!!! I guess I am just weird like that!

Oh yeah---> The chicks are fine, and they haven't had anymore huge bulges lately!!
