I recently adopted two young cockerels from another BYCer - one is a phoenix X, the other is a cochin/silkie cross.
I let the boys decide which of my two coops and harems of hens they wanted. The phoenix chose my big girls, LF brahmas. The cochin X chose the mixed flock. At night the phoenix goes to the brahma coop to roost and the cochin with the younger, mixed flock.
Then when I let them out to free range for the day, they switch. Come nighttime they go back to the flock they sleep and mate with.
Chickens are weird.
