I acquired 4 used EE's. A few months ago.
All laying great for 1 to 2 yr old range as I was told.

One dear girl lays a jumbo blue 6 out of 7 days. (The black and white in front)
However, her eggs are balloon shaped, thin shell, with tons of calcium bumps, esp at what should be the small end.

We dont care, we eat these and give the prettier ones away.

She has full access to commercial layer, oyster shell, well water and free range.

No other shell problems with 7 other hens laying. Wait, one also adds calcium pimples, sometimes.

So...when I take the calcium away....thin shell mess.

I am pretty for sure her shell gland is permantly damaged thru injury or illness.

Any ideas on healing her?

Honestly, I'd just keep doing what you're doing.

Free access to a commercial layer's pellet, oyster shell, grit and water. Minimise treats such as scratch and household leftovers.

You can get vitamin supplements which can be added to their water - it wouldn't hurt to try that to give her a boost.

At the end of the day though, that might just be how she is meant to be. These things often right themselves over time, but if not there might not be much you can do about it.

Best wishes,

Krista.

Thanks for the reply and encouragement. She is spunky and healthy, so it could just be. That's why the books say "cull", so that problem isn't passed on. But like I said, We do the egg roll call, it's One Wilma, One Princess Fluff, One Sesame, One Sweet and Sour....and one Weirdo :)

Today was a balloon more flatish. I will be trying some natural harmless remedies for inflammation and infections, that will not harm but might help.. like turmeric, cayenne, ACV, Ginger, Epsom Salts.
