Built my first quail pen a couple months ago. Everything was going smooth until last night….they are on 1/2” hardware cloth. I put a piece of roofing tin immediately under them to catch the droppings but they kept kicking the sand around and filling it up quick so I lowered it…too much. Apparently a raccoon got on the metal under the wire and killed 3 and maimed a 4th but it’s gonna survive. I’m pretty mortified because it was my lack of thinking that killed them. It has been rectified now and I officially hate raccoons.

I'm so sorry for what happened. I'm not particularly fond of raccoons myself since they took out all of my chickens last fall.

You learned the hard way, but you're not going to make the same or similar mistake again.

@Nabiki most of them have not laid since the attack. How long would you think this will last? I have 13 hens left and I’m averaging 4-6 eggs a day but was getting about a dozen prior to the attack (I lost 2 hens in the attack).

They may take up to 2 weeks before they start laying again.

thanks. On the bright side there hasn’t been anymore signs of foul play since I made adjustments. I’m sure it came back, and found a different situation.
