welsummer hens look like roosters

I am sad knowing my little welsummer donut is going to die early because she will lay to many eggs. really hoping it was a rooster so it would live a little longer.

I am new to the chicken game and was just currious as to why your welsummer will die early from hatching too many eggs. Isn't that what it was bred for?

One sign of domestication is when an animal is bred out of following a seasonal breeding schedule and begins giving birth or laying eggs year round. This is very useful for people, but it does take its toll on the animals. Over-breeding an animal exhausts their bodies and can lead to heart problems, liver failure, egg binding, ect. However, laying hens have lived longer then most roosters, as heavy breeds are more prone to dying early then lighter weight layers (or so I've heard).

I guess I never thought of that. I just assumed since they were bred for the trait that it wouldnt cause them as many issues. Thanks for your explanation it really cleared that up for me.

My yr old Welsummer hen. She has large red comb and wattle along with pointed hackle feathers, and a pretty tail. But she lays eggs
