I have got both Barnevelder and Welsummer chicks that are about 3 weeks old. Can anyone tell me how to tell them apart?
Thank you!

Hi,

Yes, I raise, breed, and show both. The Barnevelders will be much darker. Their head will be missing the distinct "V" on top and eye-liner. The stripe down the back will be a much darker brown.

They really look nothing alike. You can see pics of my Welsummers on my website. I don't have pics of my Barnies up there yet. I need to make time to do that.

God Bless,

Thank you so much for your help! I look forward to when I can see the difference easily....

I know these are a lot older than your chicks, but this should give you an idea as to what your barnevelders will morph into. They're about 8 weeks old here.

This is a bit of an older post and you may have sorted them out already

But I happen to have a batch of the same two breeds and had a picture, so here it is.

The Barnevelder is on the left with the dark head. The Welsummer on the right has conveniently turned her head so you can see the eye liner.
