1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Was given 4 pullets (gold laced Wyandotte, midnight marans, Easter egger and gold laced polish) aged 12 weeks in late August. Got a silkie mix chick and frizzle mystery chick 2 weeks later. Hatched 5 silkies and 5 polish on Friday, October 13 because we fell in love with the silkie and the polish needed a friend (loner) so we bought eggs. Then we added 2 buff Orpington, 2 starlight green egger, 2 Easter egger and 1 Americana chicks a few days after that because they were $1 at Rural King. We hatched a lot of cockerel polish so we now have 12 more eggs cooking.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I may just have been lucky to get all friendly chickens, but they are great company to have while I work outside from home all day. They’re all too young for egg laying but I’m already happy to donate my food scraps to lessen waste and have nice composting material for my garden. They have kept the weeds tamed down in my wilderness area and will gobble up any spider that comes close to crawling near me. The eggs will just be a bonus.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have kept and bred reptiles for decades. Birds are new to me, yet all too familiar in many aspects. I can do cloacal sexing on snakes, but am not planning to attempt on chicks.
