I can't say I totally disagree, This is one of the reasons DD went to the school she did. She has been taught to think for herself and to be able to voice her opinion in a convincing manner using facts to under line her beliefs. She has also been taught to respect others' opinions, even if she disagrees. Although, she is still a teen, an adult teen, and will try to convince you to see things her way. :lau :sick

That's how everyone has ever taught at the dozens of public schools at which I've been employed. I really think many people don't have an accurate understanding of public education. Most (certainly not all) of the problems I experience (and this has only been at 4 school districts in 3 cities in 2 counties) come from a shift of responsibility from the home to school. I know that's not true everywhere, but I find myself having to teach students how to speak civilly, dress appropriately, follow generally accepted hygiene practices, sit in a chair, follow directions, cope with anger, act in public.... I used to just teach English.

And I teach high school juniors and seniors.

So true. They don't have manners. Or any concept of dealing with society

I can easily believe in the dumbing down of our students through use of the education system. While working for a decentralized organization in the mid-80’s with many rules and regulations to deal with, we were notified that future publications of written documents were to be at the fifth-grade level (down from seventh-grade).

I hesitate to think where that might be now.

Really! Awesome. How long were you montessori schooled for?
Until 8th grade. They had chickens at the middle school, and one time some escaped from the run. I have had chickens since I was little, so I was the expert at catching them and returning them to the coop. I think everyone else thought I was crazy! I like gardening too, which is odd for a middle-schooler, so I didn‘t have a whole lot of friends :gig
my chickens are smarter and still evade capture  . My attempts at catching them is probably why they hate me

Don't get me wrong, folks. The majority of my students are truly fantastic people, and I genuinely love them. I have really strong opinions after my decades of experience, but it's difficult to explain them. In my opinion, there are really only a couple of things I can suggest:
1) Most educators really, really want to do right by the kids
2) Do whatever you feel is best for your kids' needs
