I just started my flock (16 chicks) on a 3 gallon bucket water system using poultry nipples. There is not leaking from the system itself, the leaking comes from when the chicks drink… a bunch of water comes out. Which in turn makes the bedding under the water system wet. I put a plastic tray under and also a grid rack for the chicks to walk on to try to keep them dry.

Is this normal for this kind of system? Am I missing something?

This is normal for a vertical nipple system. I recommend the horizontal nipples. That's what I use for my chicks.
