What’s your (or your chickens) favorite type of roost bar?

I’ve had chickens for six years now and am going to revamp their coop (again!) and wanted to see if any one had more insight on roost bars.

They’ve always used a 2x4 with the wide side up. Temporarily my chickens are also using some 2x6 with the wider side facing up. They don’t seem to have a preference and the lumber is just your standard cheap wood, nothing fancy. I sand down rough spots to prevent splinters but that’s it.

Do you do anything different with your roost bars? Are they narrower? Wider? Rounder? Covered in something?

Our chickens love the 2 by 4's and my husband says the wider ones are better for cold climates so they can keep their claws warm by sitting on them in the winter.
