Well, we had a BEAUTIFUL weekend up here in Michigan! The weather was perfect - lots of sun, puffy white clouds, not too hot, not too cold, NO humidity! It was actually cool enough in the mornings and evenings to wear a sweatshirt.

My fiance had Saturday off work (his first one in 3 months!) so I put him right to work...

Saturday started with the morning news and a cup of coffee... my friend Mike came over to visit. He gave me a great tip on my pigs - apparently if you mix some water in with their food, it increases their appetite! I am all for getting these pigs to the butcher PRIOR to the wedding - I really don't want to have to hire a sitter for them while we're out of town...

I finally got over my reservations and let the chickens out to free range. Seriously, 5 minutes after I let them out, hawks started circling. Those chickens are pretty smart though - they hightailed it right back into the coop until the hawks lost interest!

I found the chickens running around the yard very entertaining - especially the brahmas - when they run, they look like they're wearing little pantaloons!!!

I built a new trough for the pigs, which they enjoy; got their stall all cleaned out, which promptly went into the compost pile. Laid the next layer of straw in the chicken coop - I'm now on month 2 of the deep litter method. Got the driveway weeded. Got the flower garden weeded. House is clean, laundry is done!

All in all, a very productive weekend and a beautiful weekend to boot! Definitely looking forward to my day off on Wednesday so I can let the chickens out again...

Heres an idea for fattening up your pigs. I was feeding mine about 5 pounds of food a day. half pig grower pellets, and half ice cream or jelly. We got the ice cream free from a gas station whose freezer had broken over night allowing it to thaw. The jelly was stuff that grandma had been sending us (sorry grandma but one family can only eat so much jelly, at least it didnt go to waste). Our pig gained 2 1/2 pounds a day. He was a good pig.... now he's a great pig!

Sounds like you had a great weekend! Very productive! I confess, I didn't finish my list, but spent lots of time with my family so can't complain!

When I was very small, my parents bought their first pig. My sister and I named it Wilbur (ironic, looking back). We actually free ranged that cutie. My mom used to walk him on a leash down to the stream to wade. What a great pig! She tells a funny story of going to pick up the pig at the butcher's though.. he was 1/2 the size of all the others. That was the only pig that got to wander loose. Apparently all that exercise kept him fit and trim!
