what age do silkies start laying.?

I have 6 month old silkies and 2 barred rocks. today I found a egg in there .It was small . I don't know if it is the first egg of the barred rock pullet or from one of my silkies.

most chickens start laying around 6 months old, although mine didnt start layying until they were about 7 1/2 months. The small egg you got, does it feel extra thin, or extra thick. that would probobly mean it was a first time egg.

it feels like a normal egg to me just small. I know my silkie roo has started mating one on my silkie pullets. and my barred rock roo has started mating my BR pullet.

The hens don't need a roo to lay eggs. What color is the egg? dark brown or a creamy color?

As you say your cockerels are treading there pullets, this is a good sign that they will be if not all ready coming in to lay, cockerels tend not to bother treading if the pullets if they are out of lay, plus the combs on the pullets head become very vibrant red another sign of a bird coming in to lay,but this will not show on the silkies . on average a pullet comes into lay around 23 weeks to 26 weeks some can take a little longer, but the roo know what to look for, and are a very good indicator that they will be starting, if the roo are displaying and treading the hen eggs are due soon, plus an increase in food intake and birds activeness (IN AND OUT OF NEST BOXES) can be sign of egg production starting hope that help good luck hope you have plenty of eggs to come soon

Silkies are slower to mature than most other breeds, thus, they begin laying eggs a little later.
