I am a first time chicken owner, and I would really love to have a few rare breed chickens before next spring. The earliest that the coop, yard etc will be ready is June 1st (it's a long story). The breeder I am hoping to get from seems to be flexible (according to their website). I can get them as day olds, or they can brood them for me to a certain age. My chickens will be pets/egg layers, so would it be better to get them when they are older so I can be sure they are hens? Or get them as a day olds, take the risk of too many roosters and have them more bonded to me?
I'm really puzzled as which way to go, thanks for all the input.
