Ok so i have a group of six 12 week old Chicks, 5 Silkies(2 roosters) and 1 Silver Laced Wayndotte. I also have ten 4 week old chicks 3 Buff Orphingtons, 2 Golden Laced Wayndotte, 1 Silver Laced Wayndotte, 4 Easter Egger's (I think), I have the younger chicks in the coop in a seperate cage under a light to have them get use to each other, Where I live the weather is getting really warm.. only need the light on at night.. it was in the 90's today... They have only been in the coop together now for almost a week... however the Older Silver Laced Her names Mulan she kinda pecks on them through the cage, but when one of my rooster sees this he will peck on Mulan to stop.. it's kinda funny to watch.. Anyway how do I introduce them correctly. The little girls are trying to jump out of the cage whenever i go in to change there food and water, they want to be loose like the bigger girls.. I do let the bigger girls free range when I'm home to keep an eye on them... Please give all suggestions will help.... I am new to this..

We had great luck with having the chicks in the hen house in a separate pen with chicken wire between them and the big ones. No problems to speak of when they get old enough to join the others. They get along great after a day or two with no harm to the younger ones. They do learn the pecking order pretty fast.

how long did you leave them in the coop together with the younger girls in a cage for protection before letting them all out together?
