My sister is a middle school science teacher and one of her student's families raises peacocks. They donated two eggs for hatching. Both eggs hatched, but one was eaten by her house cat. (expensive meal for that little monster!) Anyway, my sister doesn't keep poultry, so the remaining peacock came to live with me! I have raised chickens for two years and have limited experience with turkeys and ducks, but no peafowl experience. Right now Siren (peacock's name) is in the broody house with a momma chicken being raised with her chicks. Can anyone help with what breed he is? And if anyone has an idea if "he" is a he or a she that would be nice to know too. Siren is three weeks old. He does have the start of little feathers out of his head, if that isn't visible in the pics.

UGH! Trying to upload a photo and the site isn't working! I'm going to go ahead and post this thread and see if it lets me in a response.

Looks like an Indian Blue. I'm thinking it is a boy, but I would like the other peafowl people to confirm my thinking or tell me differently. I give my peachicks a medicated game bird starter chick feed at 28% protein. Then I move them to a meat bird 22% protein and oyster shells.

Right now he is eating Purina flock raiser- I need to get some more game bird starter for him and my poults. I'm not super concerned about gender. Peacocks aren't really my thing, but it is cool to have one. I know that I need to worm him around 14 weeks- any suggestions on what to use and how much?

I've found some wormer pellets before in feed stores around my area. I can't remember the names of them. I know Safeguard works. Safeguard you worm for a week then give a two week break and then worm them again. The only problem is I use it on my older birds that are around 6 months and I give them 1cc. I will send over another peafowl person that's good with medications.

Don't waste your money on Rooster Booster, Safeguard for goats is the product of choice here and very safe. Valbazen is also very good but the dosing for a chick would be pretty difficult to figure unless you are @casportpony

The correct dosing of Safeguard for a mature peacock is three ml per day for five days, a hen two ml. Then repeat in ten days. Some of us like to use a second type of dewormer on the second round to keep drug resistance down in the worms.

Thanks! Sorry it took me a couple days to get back to the computer to respond. I have too many children and animals! Any suggestion on when I should worm for the first time? I read 14 weeks somewhere, but I don't even remember where now. Siren is such a friendly bird, I hope I can care for him correctly. And I have a Great Pyrenees puppy too! 5 month old female that I bought when in the aftermath of a fox massacre. No more chickens lost to that fox with a wolf living with them now! :)
