I recently posted that my next door farmer neighbour has allowed me to free range my 3 chooks in his field. They were so excited and have been having a grand time, they are very good at coming back to the coop to lay and at bedtime. Then disaster, Rocky, the black rock didn't come home on Sunday night, we searched high and low calling her (she usually comes running when we do) we were devastated believing that a predator had got her. The other 2 chickens seemed very depressed. The next day I went round to all the neighbors to see if anyone had seen anything.
Can you believe this, some children climbed over the fence and made off with her, however we then found out that she had escaped them and taken refuge 3 streets away in a young couples back garden. Thankfully in Sherlock Homes style we tracked her down and got Rocky back late Monday night. She laid an egg the next day (Wednesday) but today laid a shell less egg, maybe due to stress, and Ginger the Warren laid an egg around 9.00 pm last night, hope all returns to normal. We've now had permission from the farmer to fence off a large area in the field so they can't wander off so far.
