What are basics needed in a coop.

Water, food, calcuim for hens, roost, deep litter on the floor, nest boxes. Good ventilation is a must. My flock is free range but I supply food in the coop as well as on the ground outside. Sometimes they just like to hang in the coop and it makes them feel secure if there is always food and water available. I built a coop last year and it has been very successful. Check out my BYC web pages for pics and info.

depends on the style of your coop, some people make them so you can walk in to them or have them small enough or tall enough to reach in there to clean and to collect eggs. a roost is what they roost on sleep on, they want to be as high as they can get at night.

A roost is where the chickens sleep at night. It should be higher than the next boxes to prevent sleeping in the nest boxes.

Height can be anything you want it to be, higher would be better in a warmer climate. Mine is an existing shed so I was restricted to that height. It is 6' on the sides with about 8' at the peak.
