This is probably normal behaviour but apologies as they are my first ducks.
One of our October hatched ducks has recently started laying. However we weren’t sure who it was but someone was making lovely nests out of the chopped straw. Early hours of this morning I checked my “coop cam” and managed to see one duck in action laying an egg. Mystery solved I thought…
However as she laid the egg one of the other girls became interested and after she laid, the other kicked her off the egg and got very excited making a nest around the egg and sitting down on it quite splayed (broody type sitting).
This duck is not laying but we have noticed in recent weeks has developed a bit of a soft pouch where an egg would sit, so we were suspicious it could be her laying. She is otherwise well. She stayed on the egg until we let them out this morning. She does not continue to sit on the egg in the morning, she is happy to leave them and we pick the egg up.
Is it normal for her to act like this over eggs when she is not laying yet?
Whilst she was laying on the egg, one of the other non layers came over and was trying to roll the egg out from underneath her. She didn’t manage too.
Is this curiosity again normal?
TIA
