We got four bantam chicks at Atwoods today. They were assorted, so we don't know what they are. Any suggestions as to what they may be?

My camera was being funny with the lighting in this one. A new picture may be best if nobody can tell what it is in this picture.

This is the same chick, but is a little blurry. I'll have to take some better pictures of this one, I think. You can see the one behind it pretty much perfectly though.

Also while reviewing the pictures I took and picking out the best looking ones, I noticed that the white chick seemed to have something on its rear.

This is my first time having chicks and I'm really worried that I'll do something wrong and end up killing them. Is something wrong with this little chick? Also anyone have a rough idea on age? I forgot to ask the workers at Atwoods. Though I'm not sure that they would have even known. The white chick is just a little bit bigger than the others.

I do have one question as well. Right now we're using a 40 watt regular light bulb. I didn't think that it was right for them since it's a regular bulb and not a chick one. So we're about to go get a 250 watt red bulb. Now the light isn't hanging over them, it's clipped onto the brooder. It can't really be moved up or down at all, so will 250 make them too hot?

I do not know what breed they are.

1. Does the white one have poop stuck to it's butt?
That can be a deadly problem.
You must gently clean it...do not pull it off...you can pull it's insides out.
Warm soft cloth..gently wipe it.

2. I have never had a problem with a regular 40 watt bulb....But I am able to move it higher...away from the chicks as needed.
Make sure you are only warming ONE side of the "brooder", too much heat can cause the poopy butts too.

Alright I'll get some help to clean to poop off. Will cleaning it fix the problem, or will it need some sort of medication? Also the 40 watt is making it about 80 degrees, so I think a 250 will kill them because it'll be too hot. Not being able to move it up would be the main issue with that. I'm switching to a 60 watt to see what that brings to temp. up to.

You mentioned you have it clipped on something...

Could you possible clip it onto something else?
Like a chair next to the brooder?

You don't need a 250 watt bulb for 4 chicks!!!! Regular incandescent bulbs, not LEDS. It's harder to find them but LEDS dont put out enuf warmth.
I got a ceramic heat emitter bulb at a pet store, they sell them for reptiles. They put out heat but no light and the chicks sleep all night. Mine is 75 watt and ive already had to raise it to get a cooler temp.
Raise or lower your light to get the right temp...
Good lucjk!

It's around 90 degrees now with the 60 watt. They're moving around a bit more rather than just huddling together under the light. I think for now the 60 will work, and I'll just have to keep an eye on it. That ceramic heat bulb is something for us to think about though, Sue. Thank you both! Still interested in what everything thinks they might be if anyone knows. :)

I'm going to say post pics of them again in a few weeks once they get their feathers.
Still too young to tell.

Alright, will do! I thought that they may be a little young to tell. Now to go try and get the poop off of the white chick.
