I started a new flock about a month ago after losing the last one to a bobcat. My last flock loved just about everything I gave them but this flock is super picky. They don't even go crazy for mealworms. So far, the only thing they love is raisins. So give me some ideas. What are you flocks favorite treats?

It's never good to give your chickens too many treats, but limiting is fine. Mine love all green treats; all of the vegetable scraps go to them. Lettuce, asparagus, carrots, pumpkins, squash, etc., and their favorite is tomatoes. Good luck!

Chickens can be very suspicious of new foods. Once a bird tries it, then the rest will generally follow. If they turn their beaks up at one treat, try it again some time later. But treats should not make up more than 10% of their daily ration. They are like children and candy. They will prefer the treats and turn away from nutritionally sound products.

They each get a single treat when they say good morning to me after I let them out of their house and then one when I get home from work about an hour before their bedtime. They only get more treats on the weekends when I am training them. I'm determine to teach them to stay off the furniture and jump up on my arm on command. I was hoping to find something they like that is more nutritious than raisins.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. My flock goes crazy over the seeds and innards that I clean out of the pumpkins every October when I turn them into Jack-O-Lanterns.) They also love chunks of watermelon. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

When they are not free ranging they go nuts over dandelion greens, they are free from my lawn where I don't mow, and really good for them. They also love cottage cheese, high in protein and I get it free as well, from where I work.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3 It does take most chickens awhile to get used to eating new things. Sometimes it is easier to just mix whatever you want to eventually use as a treat in with their food for awhile, eventually they will eat it and recognize it as food.

They won't be free ranging for a while. The girls are grounded to their coop until we get a new dog to protect them. The bobcat didn't dare venture into our yard until our dog died. So at least 4 months before we even get our new dog. (We're waiting for one of our breeder's bitches to come into heat).
