What brand feed?

How old are your pullets?
Layer has the extra calcium that may/can cause chicks & Roos liver/kidney damage. I used to do the "stage/age" feeding but not start off with the smallest bag of Medicated Chick Starter for at least a month or two, then switch to Flock Raiser. I put out an separate dish of Oyster Shells when they start laying, chicks/Roos may try it but not eat.

Some have said layer is no issue for their mixed flock, see what others say & research what to feed, we all have our own opinions. Welcome to the World of Chickens :jumpy

I personally do not feed layer to my flock. I have a multi-age flock, plus I like providing higher protein for my girls. I feed Purina Flock Raiser with oyster shell in a separate container for them to eat as needed. Plus, I prefer the crumbles over the pellets. My flock seems to enjoy them too! :gig
Good luck with your pullets!!!

I have 4 chickens that are 5 months old. 3 of them just started laying (so exciting!!!). I've been feeding them the Dumor Layer Crumble. It agrees with them and the eggs have nice shells but the crumble tends to be like dust.

It's so exciting!! They really do have their own personalities. I enjoy them so much! I'm also a newbie so the feedback you all provide is so appreciated!

Also make sure that you check the mill date on each bag, and only get bags within one month or less of milling, and feed it within another two to four weeks at most. Fresh is best!
I also feed Flock Raiser to everyone, with separate oyster shell. It's fresh at my local feed stores most often, and I only bring it home fresh.

There's several thread on FF (fermenting feed), I tried it couple years ago and love the benefits. All that "dust" get used, no waste & nice poop

No such luck getting feed that fresh due to shipping  Our "freshest" is at least 2 months from mill date :hmm Shipping adds $$$ to our cost of living expenses :hit

The choices of feed seem endless unfortunately my Budget Is Not. One thing I don’t skimp on is feed. Not for my dogs or my chickens. I’m in the process of using up the last of my crumbles (pullets are 5 months now). I order on line because I live in a very rural area and the hardware store carries crap. See what’s available in your area look for a higher protein percentage. I also supplement with meal & soldiers worms, black oil seeds etc...I have never used scratch and don’t plan to. Cracked corn in winter is a must for me. I order from Blue Buffalo if that’s helpful to you.
