What breed and gender are these...??

Hi all,
I just bought 2 new hens, and would like to know what breed they are! I bought them in a market in Portugal, and the guy said they were 'French.... something something..' and I'd love to know what they are! Also, could the darker/blacker one on the right be a male?! The tail feathers do seem rather errect, and it seemed to really be protecting the other hen.

They look like pullets to me. The black actually looks like a sex link. Basically, I think both are mixed breed.
