We are relatively new chicken lovers. Currently have 15 hens and a roo. We originally planned for 10 of a mixed variety but about 3 weeks before they came in, someone reached out to us. They had bought 6 (NYS law) chicks as a pet for their son and realized their error about a week later. So we took them in and raised them. We ended up with the 16 of them after getting our 10 we planned on (a mix of Americana, wyandotte, barred rock and austrolorps).
They were supposedly a week old when we got them March 8th this year and started laying early July. The people we got them from spoke broken English and didn't know what breed they were.
They did tell us that they were purchased from tractor supply.
So far they have a good temperament and the roster has behaved himself!
As the white ones hit 3 months old, they started getting the coloring in their feathers you see in the pictures. Looked like dirt at first!
I included adult and chick (1-4 weeks) photos.
The black ones look almost gray because we recently added a bit of DE to their sand bath and they are always in it. But they normally are silky black with some speckling on the breast.
