i saw at a asian live bird market they had silkies for sale and brown meat chicken. I always thought that brown meat is just from a silkie but what other breed could this be

I think all chickens are basically the same besides silkies.Myabe they meant brown feathered chickens?

Hmmm. Never heard that one before. I was under the impression that Silkies just had dark skin (black skin from what I was told).

My quail were all dark meat though. Maybe there is a couple chicken breeds that are darker than others???

The only black meated birds besides a Silkie (and i mean meat, not just pigment) is the Hmong qaib, or Hmong chicken. They're basically a silkie crossed with Oriental gamefowl (then i think bred back to the Oriental game).. I'd have to ask a friend of mine to be 100%.

ETA: Actually, there are a few Cemani crosses running around in the US.. I believe maybe still a pure or so, though I am not sure. They're the "famous" all black chickens. Not enough to care about in your situation though, only a select few have them. And i would guess counting crosses there are only 20-30 birds IF anywhere near that.

Yeah, there are Silkies with black meat and also Cemani - But those aren't available in the US except for a few crossbreeds.

Hi guys, just my guess... but alot of asians dont like to eat chickens with white feathers even though they may never even see the feathers. So a "brown chicken" is just a chicken with brown/red/dark feathers. By the way, I breed Hmong qaib and they have black to grayish skin tones. It would be very interesting to see a brown chicken if there's such a thing
