I am wanting to get into one breed of chicken to start breeding but I am not sure which breed. I have done research and looked at many breeds but cant decide. It can be a standard or bantam breed. I have a serama as a pet and don't want to get into breeding them, and I have a family member that is allergic to silkies. We have had many breeds and want to narrow it down to a small laying flock and then focus on one breed. I want to be able to show them and later down the road sell fertile eggs. We keep bouncing around different breeds but cant seem to find a breed me and my mom both want to work on ( hence the list of what we don't want ) Also my mom does not like white colored chickens

What we don't want is any
Crested
aggressive
silkied
flighty breeds

We manly want
Calm
Friendly breeds
It would be great if they would go broody but don't have to.

Breeds we like,
Orpingtons
Ameraucanas
Araucanas
Marans

Thanks!

This is probably "counting your chickens before they're hatched", but if all goes well I'll have English-type Lavender Orp hatching eggs for sale early this fall.

Allabout - What breed you should get is kind of a loaded question and you are going to get a load of different answers all based on everyones own personal likings. You need to really think about what you want. Are you looking for single comb, pea comb, rose comb... clean legged verses feather legged... Do you want a heavy breed or light.... Looking for all around purpose, egg layer or meat... What do you want to see running around your yard?? What are you going to breed for, selling eggs, showing, meat.... There are soo many questions and soo many variables to go with them. If you want to show you really need to get yourself to the shows are start learning about the different breeds that are accepted by the APA, once you narrow down your breed you need to focus on "standards", join the club of the breed you choose to learn all that you can and go from there. You will not find what you are looking for at Tractor Supply or the man on CL selling 50 different birds in a mixed flock. Tough decisions and lots of them. Good luck in finding the one that fits you.
