Hello! I am the district elementary science coordinator in my first year. Like many schools, we hatch chicks. Now that we are getting closer to having our chicks go to their forever flocks, I’d like to tell families what kinds of chicks we have. All came from lighter to medium brown eggs, and all are about a week and a half, almost 2 weeks old. They are all pretty much the same size, too. In researching, I think the majority of them are Black Australorp females. We have one I think is also a Black Australorp, but a male (no real tail feathers and has pretty even length wing feathers). But what about the rest? We have one that is mostly black with fuzzy legs and black feet and one who is lighter grey and has a silver stripe on the back of its head. It also has black around its eyes.

They are much to young to sex and they are most likely crossbreds. 99% of classroom chicks are crossbreds. Being there is a very good chance they are mixes they are to young to accurately determine breeds.

Okay. At what age could we potentially figure out what mix they are? Most of them look like all the pictures of Black Australorps at 1 day old, so pretty sure that is one of the breeds.
