I found someone on Craigslist (I know, I know....) who is selling 7 week old "rainbow layers" that were part of a variety pack from a hatchery. What breeds would be in this kind of assortment? She doesn't seem to know what she's got.
I want to expand my flock but I do not have the patience to brood chickens now again nor the resources to create a seperate area for the new birds this year. Same age chickens would be PERFECT!

They could be any breed the hatchery sells. They should be full sized fowl, not bantams, otherwise they could not sex them. It will be just what the hatchery had excess of that day. Since they are layers, they should be sexed as pullets, though you probably know the hatcheries only guarantee 90% accuracy on sexing. The rainbow means different colors of the feathers and diffferent patterns. It does not mean different colored eggs.

I was told that a rainbow layer asst. Was different colored egg layers, such as RIR, barred rock, austrolorps, EE, leghorns.

We got the Rainbow Layers last year from McMurray and got mostly brown leghorns & barred rocks (8 of each if I remember right) with a cochin, an EE, a couple Anconas, and a few Australorps

and an Egyptian Favreolle as the free exotic chick. Buuuut, from my understanding they are pretty much just an assortment of what they have extra when they get ready to ship them.
