first, I’m still new to chickens. Forgive me if I’m asking dumb questions. :)

I’ve got 6 hens that free range all day on our horse ranch. Their coop is in the center of the property inside the barn garage. They go out every morning by 7, in around 4:30. Started ranging in August. Stayed close until mid winter, now try go wherever they want.

I’ve got 25 acres and while they haven’t strayed too far, they still go all over the place. They’re not technically allowed in my neighborhood but we are participating in egg shows so we can have them, i would just prefer not to draw attention.

My barred rocks are so friendly and stay in the barn a lot. Occasionally they’ll go with the flock but often they’re within 150-200 feet of their coop in the closest fields or on the compost pile.

I’m raising some new chicks to replace the non friendly birds (two white leghorns and two gold wyandottes) and wondering if there are breeds I should be looking at that may not be inclined to free range EVERYWHERE they can get to.

What’s your best luck with breeds that stay close to home???

I got some Buff Orpington, some Cuckoo Marans, some Easter Eggers and some Welsummers. Plan on keeping a flock of 8-10 of the most friendly of all the birds once they feather out and start to show their personalities.

Thru personal experience, as far as larger birds are concerned, my white leghorns are known as the wanderers. They go very far from the roost when allowed to far range. 2 acres sometimes. But always return for the sound of that feed can lid. I have various heritage breeds and they all stay close except the white leghorns.
