Hi!
I've got a RIR hen that is the friendliest of my four, all different breed hens. They all just started laying in March. This RIR is also the noisiest. Now that I've taken the winterizing stuff off the coop it's especially loud. Mostly about 6-6:30 in the morning for about 10-15 minutes at a time but a few times during the day also. When it gets warm enough to start opening windows I'm afraid my neighbors aren't going to be too happy on the weekend mornings. I'm not worried about the day but that's a little early on a weekend and even during the week for some.
Any suggestions on how to get her quiet other than me jumping out of bed and running out to bang on the coop which seems to shut her up for a bit?
I have a feeling one of them is laying an egg and she is turning it into a party because she gets them all going. But the rest are rather quiet about it and she's squawking for all she's worth. I have at least two that are very early layers. I think she may be one of them. I hate to get rid of her but if my neighbors complain I may have to.
I could close the pop door each night but I don't think that would help because the top of coop has a roof 6" over top of coop and top of coop just has hardware cloth over it to keep out predators - so it's basically open at the top.
Be glad to hear any ideas anyone has. Thanks!

I don't think theres much you can do. When one of my hens lay, they all sing and it does get pretty loud. Even my little pullets who aren't laying squawk for all they're worth.
The only suggestion I have is to try to make the coop darker to delay them waking up so early. If you go that route, you'll still have to keep ventilation in mind.

Good luck.
