my girls were roosting great and using the nest area until 2 days ago - then one of them started laying on the floor under the roost (big ol pile of shavings there) - then yesterday I find all of the eggs there - like I went to all that work to have to get eggs off the floor. Luckily it's in a spot where they don't poop. I had put the golf balls away - so guess I'll have to get them back out again.

I hope mine dont do that once I get them to stay on roosts!

Uhm, why does everyone seem to 'make' them roost?
What's wrong with them being on the floor?
I'm guessing the whole predator thing might be a reason, but they can jump, some can climb, not too great then, either.
I donno, my young birds just pile on each other and I don't mind. We are surrounded by cattle farmers, the cows like to stomp and charge anything 'dangerous looking', so I don't worry too much about anything actually making it to my yard. There's a busy road they also need to cross w/o becoming road kill, which this time of year, very few are good at escaping.

Either way, whenever I do place them on anything, they give me dirty looks and then hop down, lol.

I have created a sort of nest box in the corners of my coop by placing a short board (about 2 feet long) "catty-corner" and placing straw inside. The silkies love to line up and sleep on it, while one is content to sleep inside the nest area. Also...If you leave an open space at one end (a gap of about 3 inches) then if a hen decides to raise her chicks there they feel safe yet can scoot around that corner until they are big enough to hop on the top edge to go in and out. It works really well for me! this is my first time visiting this site and I can clearly see-its going to be fun!

Great News! I went outside to go set them on their roosts...And they were all PERCHEd up on it!

I was so happy hopefully they will be there again tomorrow night!
