Hi, One baby chick hatched yesterday and was moved to the brooder today. He will be all alone for the first 11 days of his life.:( We are trying to give him mental stimulation, like training him to come. Right now he will come for his regular chick food. I was wondering at what age I can start giving him sunflower seeds. They do not have the shells. Thank you!

Proprietary chick feed and water available 24 hours a day is the best thing you can provide at the moment. Forget anything else, for the moment at least

thank you
also it is very warm here about 87 degrees and the chick loves running around on the carpet! We think the food might be a little bit big for him. Should I grind it down a little? Also he isn't eating or drinking very much.

If the food is Starter or chick feed then it’s ok. Chicks are good for at least 48 hours after hatch in terms of food and water so don’t worry too much.

I agree with not giving treats, just the chick starter, otherwise I think you have to give them chick grit to digest their food and I don't think you are suppose to give them that before 2 weeks. Maybe hang a little mirror in the brooder, so it will feel like it has company:)

For chick entertainment I go to Walmart and buy the cheap bird cage toys. Just make sure no small pieces to peck off or stings to wound up in. Mine always love them when they’re small
As far as food. I would stick with only chick feed for now. It gives them a healthy start in the nutrition they need. My pullets Just got their first “treat” this week and they’re 14 weeks old. Mealworms and cherry tomatoes they were in love

They liked jumping on the sides and back of that thing. I think sometimes just giving them something where they can be on a different elevation or putting low poles in there excites them. I will use small crafting dowels for that just at different levels
