What can I give my Guinea fowl for treats?

I have 4 guinea fowl all 2 months old. I was wondering if there are treats I can give them? I just changed over thier diet from turkey started to chicken grower. Do they like millet? Any and all suggestions are welcome!!! thank you

I hear they LOVE millet. I wish I could find some for my guineas. They like to eat the sunflower seeds though!

WHITE MILLET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Use it as a treat though, even moreso as a teaching tool (only giving them some after they do good things). Other than that they should eat anything chickens eat. Cabage, kale, tomatoes, corn, watermelon, strawberries, cottage cheese, BUGS, and many many many other things.

Like everyone else has expressed- white millet. My flock goes bananas for it. I do offer a bit everyday and do not find it dampens their enthusiasm if I also need to use it for training. Most places that sell birdseed have millet available. A lot of 'wild bird seed' mixes consist almost entirely of millet with some other seeds thrown in, though typically it is golden millet and while my guineas will eat it, they do prefer the white, proso millet. It's also not difficult to grow your own. I also find they adore amaranth and like sunflowers seeds. If it's a seed, they don't ever seem to turn their beaks up.


My guineas reside with my chickens but won't eat fruit, or leafy, loose greens (except they will graze on grass/weeds) which pleases me a lot as they free range within acres of fruits & vegetables. They do a great job of helping to weed and keep down pests on the farm without damaging the crops.

I find they also enjoy whatever bugs I can provide.

Hope you enjoy your flock. I can't say enough about what wonderful birds they are. I have 32 of them.

Thanks for all the replys! How old should they be before i introduce new foods other than thier norm? How about mealworms?

Yes, white proso millet is their weakness, and it gets pricey. Mealworms are another weakness (love them) also pricey. I have found the cheapest treat they go crazy for is bulk frozen corn. When they see that bag, they come running. I always keep one in the veggie drawer in the fridge, or just defrost in the micro. I can't imagine a guinea with brain freeze, thought it may be fun to watch on a hot summer day! I think if you go easy, anything can be introduced in small amounts at any age.

Canned corn is the treat my guineas absolutely love. They make their happy sounds and come running when they see me carrying that can. The chickens also love the canned (room temperature) corn. They all turn up their beaks at frozen corn, and at any cold fresh out of the fridge foods.

Hello from San Antonio! Rosie and Lee are still safely in coop (Gitmo)for training...week 3!
So far so good...Rosie laying an egg a day again!
They are quiet, seem content as we form up fence in yard...Lee, the 2 yr old Male, is very much a people pleaser! He was first to learn his name, to come home when called- told him other day to take broody Rosie into baby coop house, located within big coop., to lay her eggs.
He understood. Herded her into lower part of shelter house in coop...now, all eggs are being laid there!
These birds are highly intelligent, and can learn human speech as much as a dog.
They are content- finally- and every night I come out to patio, tell them to "go up"- used to be one of my oak trees, now they both fly up to their big limbs I have secured inside Gitmo for their roosting pleasure!
Have a wonderful July 4th...I am hoping by then to release them to free range in my back yard and neighbor's...abt half an acre in total.
Meanwhile, the fence repair goes on to secure more freedom for my babies!
