What causes prolapse and is there a way to stop it.

I would like to introduce myself with a question maybe can be answered. I noticed my Hen with a red round ball like thing coming out of her backside I looked it up and they're calling it prolapse. I was able to put it back up in her with my finger will this reoccur and is there a way to stop this from happening thank you

I see that you have posted on the ER Forum which is the best place to get answers regarding your girls prolapse; I do hope that she is OK!

I'm sure the ER folks will be able to help you out. I think sometimes prolapse is treated (among other ways) by keeping the hen in a darkened place to keep him from laying more eggs for awhile.

I have dealt with prolapse before and I am sorry because it is tough. But can be treated. Especially with the help of backyard chickens. That’s how I discovered this site is trying to find out what was hanging out of my chickens vent. It does help to keep them in the dark to prevent them for laying and to keep her away from the rest of the floor so she doesn’t get pecked At least If its hanging out. My experience is it would go back in but 24 hours later it was back out. There are several people on this site that can give you some really good help and advice. I really hope things stay in in your hen is doing OK

And even after it finally stay put I kept her in the dark area to keep her from playing for a while longer to make sure it’s stayed put
