I know that the chick died, but it was fertile and growing right? Or else it wouldn't have the blood ring?
So what causes it to die when other eggs of different types put in the same incubator on the same day are doing great?

From what I read, it is from bacteria. Maybe the protective coating was "scratched" off in spots and bacteria made its way in. I've always wondered the same thing. How are those duckies doing?? I am sure they are messy by now..

Yes, if you have a bloodring, the egg was viable and at some point started development. There are several things that can interrupt that development however. One of them might be bacteria. Some eggs are porous and easily penetrated by bacteria. Another reason might be that the genetics weren't absolutely where they needed to be to complete the makeup for a chick.

Those are the only two things I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there will be more answers.

So very dissappointing.
On a happier note the ducks are doing wonderful Chickie_Mamma . They are all adorable but the crested is superb.
Yes they are messy and quite stinky too. But that is what the great outdoors is all about. Can't hardly smell a thing out there!
They love going in the little pool but I find them in their water bowl (BIG) all the time. Silly ducks!

Glad to hear the happier note

I was just bummed myself. I had 8 duck eggs in the bator myself and they are due Monday, and 2 quit. I always wonder why too, but I guess there is a reason. My 2 have no blood rings, but just quit. The others are fine. I just chalk it up to "mother nature"

Ahhh I remember the post when you put them in too. Well good luck on your hatch. We will want to see pictures you know.
My husband loves the little crested guy. So he took pictures and put the best one in the fair. We will see if it wins.
