Hello-
Does anyone know what kind these off colored ducklings could be? I bought a pair of grey calls last year, and I hatched out 3 "fawn or buff" ducklings out of them.

What could a grey call be split to, to get this color? Im guessing Blue Fawn???

I will have to update with some recent pictures later today! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Actually, those appear to be Nutmegs (Wild type with sex-linked brown dilution). Do you want to sell them?

A bird (Mallard-derived) cannot be split for Blue with that not showing. Blue is incompletely dominant, so in the heterozygous state (aka "one dose" or "split") it results in Blue Fawn (in the presence of wild type). In the homozygous state, it would result in Pastel. If a bird has even one copy, it will show. Are you sure both parents are Greys?

If you are positive of that, then I would say those ducklings would be Nutmeg, which you don't see very often. It is very possible that your drake is Grey in appearance, but heterozygous for sex-linked brown dilution and that your brown ducklings are females because a Brown drake (or "split" brown) on a Grey duck is a sex-linked mating. I would hate to see you stuck with those Brown ducklings. I suppose I could take them off your hands if you want to pack them up and send them my way.

Ah! That would make sence if they were sex linked, all 3 that hatched out of the grey pair were girls, and all of the regular greys that I had hatched out, were boys... Both of the parents are GREY CALLS. I cant find my female now, I dont know if she got turned into prey, or if she wiggled her way out again to go hide her nest and start setting, she was known for that. I love these little girls. I also have Miniature Silver Appleyards, and muscovy ducks, along with chickens, geese, etc...

I do have some ducklings and eggs in the incubator already if you would be interested, but these girls are staying at home!!!

So now I do not have the mother to these ducklings anymore, unless she went off sitting on eggs someplace... But I do still have the dad, and the 2 hens(09 hatch), and they are laying like crazy, they are still with their dad, because all my MN state fair blue ribbon grey calls had gotten pulled off by a fox! :-(

What cross would that make mating them back to their father.

Or a if I find another SQ male and cross them back to him!?

Thanks for all your imput!

With the additional information about them being hens, I would say you almost certainly have Nutmegs. How exciting for you! I would definitely take some eggs if you want to sell or trade some. I have several extremely rare varieties. I have the Mini Appleyards and Austrailian Spotteds too. I also have some of the first of the Mini Overbergs and so far, they are laying great. I also have rare color mutation Mallards, but the year is not off to a great start with them so far. Anyway, let me know. I would probably buy some outright a little later in the spring if you decide to sell some. If I were you, I would breed them back to their father and you will then get some Nutmeg drakes as well since that is not a sex-linked mating. Good for you! I would be thrilled to have that color pop up in my birds!

Mini Overbergs! WOW! Send me some pics of those...

[email protected]

Id love to see some more pics of them...

I have been breeding them back to their dad... To get the nutmeg drakes. I am tring to find some more Grey hens that are SQ, and breed the call drake to them.

LOL, you have good timing. I just started a new thread about the Overbergs. You could definitely go the route of breeding the father back to the Nutmeg daughters and also breeding the Nutmeg or split drakes back to the Grey hens (which will always result in Nutmeg hens in the offspring). This of course, is presuming that they are definitely Nutmeg. Do you have pictures of the hens grown? If they are Nutmeg, they should have brownish colored wing speculums.

I love the Overbergs!!! I just put some of the call duck eggs in the incubator, they should be fertile, the male breeds them non-stop in their little pond that they have, last year I had 100% fertility!

I also attached a few pics of them, and they do have the brown wing speculums,

Let me know what you think of the color.
