I have a Pekin/Cayuga who I believe is a female and I’m curious what colour the eggs may be. She’s only 7 weeks old so we have some time before she lays. The mother was the Pekin, dad the Cayuga.

Aww she looks like a blue swedish duck. I'm pretty sure she will lay completely white eggs like a pekin or lay almost black eggs in the winter and by the summer it will be a pretty light gray.I have a Pekin/Cayuga who I believe is a female and I’m curious what colour the eggs may be. I don't want to be rude or anything but the duck you bought is probably pretty old. Cayugas get white feathers as they get pretty old. Can you tell me in a few weeks or something is she laid much eggs? If not you may have been scammed by the lady and the Cayuga is 5-6 years old. If you don't believe me here is a picture of a young vs old Cayuga.Someone else mentioned she looked like a blue Swedish too but I don’t think the lady I got the eggs from had any of these. She’s starting to get beautiful green feathers...she’s a real sweetheart too.View attachment 2687781View attachment 2687788

The ones with white are old![]()
(Mine also had white plumage at 6 weeks so I can't say for sure she scammed you)

Do you know if they generally lay white eggs? It's not pure Cayuga it's a Pekin/Cayuga cross. A black duck crossed with a white gives you 100% chance of black self-bibbed duckling.
I have never had a pekin/Cayuga cross, but in general ducks will get one copy of an egg color gene from each parent. Normally the more colorful the gene the more dominant for example blue/green is dominant over white which is recessive. The egg color itself happens because of gland excretion in the ducks uterus and the best visualization/explanation I have heard is to think of an egg on an assembly line being painted as it goes by and the amount of pigment is determined by how fast the egg passes by. Technically the egg itself doesn't have any color to begin with, but the color is later added to the testa layer of the egg. For example, most of my ducks lay blue or green eggs and when you scrub off the bloom they will then appear a lighter shade of blue or green. If you were to scrub the bloom off of a Cayuga egg you will end up with a light gray almost white stained egg by the time you're done. If you dive deep into it you get into dilutions, mutations etc. There is no 100% way to determine egg color with ducks, but I would guess that the chances are a little higher of your hen laying gray/black eggs since white is a recessive gene.Do you know if they generally lay white eggs?
I didn't know that. Thanks for telling me!It's not pure Cayuga it's a Pekin/Cayuga cross. A black duck crossed with a white gives you 100% chance of black self-bibbed duckling.
She really does look like your older girls, I can understand why you thought that.I didn't know that. Thanks for telling me!
