My chickies are busily hatching this evening, and it's very exciting.

But i had one that pipped, zipped about an inch, and then died.

I was able to see it's mouth through the hole while it was still alive, and it appeared to be breathing, etc. But then it died.

What are the possibilities about why this happened?

That is too bad. I don't have your answer, but do send condolences.

I did not open the incubator until after this one had been dead for some time.

My humidity had gone from 55 to 70 while they were hatching.

Sometimes they just do run out of steam in spite of everything else seeming to be right.

It is strange that it would die while zipping. Sometimes bad things happen, and there's not really a good reason. It's possible the chick was just not meant to be, was too weak (was it making noise?), pipped through a vein, or had an issue inside the egg you did not observe- which you could possibly see if you cracked it open and took a look.

Whatever the reason I'm very sorry for your loss so close to the finish line
