I plan on only starting with 4-6 chickens and going up to 12 at some point this summer or next summer. We live in the Chicago area (Indiana unincorporated area) so we have colder winters. Would it be okay to just cover the chicken wire blanket on the run with thick plastic in the winter to protect them from wind but still give them access to the run.

Additional info would be that my husband would love to give the chickens as much space as possible so a smaller coop or run he is not keen on. (spoiling chickens that aren't even bought yet, lol)

you could build a small house and let them free range although I warn you that they will wreck your garden and you will have to watch out for predators

free ranging won't work :( We have a good size garden but mainly because we live in an area with lots of possible predators.

I wouldn't risk predators then maybe if you have an empty shed you could convert it and then build a run
