Steve, does your wife know that you were playing with rattlers??

The rattlers around here never seem to leave the Alander mountains. Their heavily concentrated in a small area. They say you'll never see them west of route 22. Which runs north & south. That land has been part of the state park for a very long time. That's probably why their still there. We have these really nasty brown water snakes tho. They're not poisonous, but they do have a nasty disposition.

Are those brown water snakes the ones that bit up Mike Rowe in that hysterical episode of Dirty Jobs?

Yesterday I opened the back door to see a black snake, about 3 feet long, moseying across my walk. Punkin saw it before I could stop him and shot after it. Snake dashed to my outdoor waterpump and wiggled around it, Punkin hot on his trail. Snake went on one side, Punkin on the other. Punkin went around to find it, snake went on the other side. Round and round, twice, until the snake found a hole and slithered into it. Now that I know he's there, Im very careful when I turn on the water. But he can stay.

He's beautiful. I hope you let him go to do to his very important snaky thing.

We had a black snake tangled in the netting over the chicken coop last year. He was ~4' long. I was here by myself and it was getting dark when I found him. I got scissors and a stick (just in case) and proceeded to cut him free. It took about 20 minutes. I started at the end furthest from the head. Poor guy was exhausted from struggling and very scared. When I got everything but the head free, I discovered that his jaw was caught in the netting. He had dropped his tail over the side of the hen house and was pulling for all he was worth. I finally worked the tip of the scissors under the netting and snipped. He climbed up into the nearest cherry tree and sat there for a very long time. The roof of the hen house was covered in the scales he had lost struggling. Poor baby. I am sure he could not really hunt for a couple of days. I have not seen him since.
