What determines a hen to go broody

Somebody once told me that the temp in the coop can encourage a hen to go broody, and having a broody hen in a dog cage with food and water but having a fan blowing cold air into the cage but having the towel on the side of the cage that the air is blowing in but leaving the towel an inch or 2 off the ground so the bottom of the cage
 
wait so cold air in the bottom of the coop breaks it?
I think the whole cage thing describes it. Broody cages are often used. Other tactics are, yes, coldness. Some people use frozen water bottles to slide under hens to breaks their broody behavior
