Ok, I ordered from "chickens for backyards" and paid to have the chicks marked so I would know who was who. I ordered 16 chicks some for me, some for a few other people and I figured I may have a few to sell. I ordered Dominique, Barred Rock, Cuckoo Maran, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, Welsummer and EE. I was so excited when I picked them up from the P.O. until I opened the box and they were not marked!! AAAAHHHHHH. Chickens for backyards refunded the money I paid to mark the chicks and were very apologetic but it doesn't help me out. Well it was easy to figure out who the EE's were. I am pretty sure I know who the speckled sussex are. To add to the confusion they added an extra chick! The other person who took 5 of the chicks helped me try to figure it out who was who but now that they are almost 2 weeks old I am wondering if I got the right chicks. All the barred rock, maran and dominque look alike. As do the welsummer and speckled sussex although now I can see a difference I still don't know if the welsummer is a welsummer (the one I think is a welsummer hasn't gotten tail feathers yet). Here are the most recent pics and I am hoping some of you can help!

I ordered 4 EE and they all have the muff (that's what I call it, under the beak, feathers sticking out don't know technical term!) so I don't think the first 2 are EE. Here is one of the EE, hard to see her muff but it is there.

omg! u are completely right! i don't know what i was thinking those are most def. welsummers

In pic #5, the left is the welsummer, right is the SS. SS have a yellow belly, narrower body and I don't even know what you'd call it but they look like they have white eyeliner on when they close their eyes. They'll also be you LOUDEST chicks, LOL. 6-9 both SLW, Second one I get a roo vibe from. :( The black chicks I haven't a clue! Time will tell the tale there!

I was wondering scince i am getting my first ever chicken because we have a duck but might get a chicken. What kind of chicken do u reccomend based on your reasearch because i always wanted one that was not harsh or mean, but nice to pick up and pet.

Cute pictures!

We were told she would be noisy but our Wellsummer is very quite and ( for lack of a better word) quite dainty. At 11 weeks she is already stunning beautiful. One of our two Buff Orpingtons, chosen specifically for their docile temperaments is about the most high strung (and bossiest) chicken I have even had!

We have a Marans and she has beautiful blue black feathers. She trills more than any other the other and also makes a sweet kuck kuck sounds but she is not a pretty chicken and even as a chick was not as cute as the black chicks in your photos.

Marans usually have feathered legs but often times hatchery birds do not. Dominiques have a rose comb and barred rocks have single combs. I see 2 silver-laced Wyandottes and I think you're right on the SS. I'm not familiar with the Welsummer breed. You're gonna love your mixed flock!

What I am learning is that no matter what the breed description says, chicks have distinct personalities. If this is your first experience I would recommend getting medium/larger hens of one of the more sturdy and reliable breeds.

Of our chickens the Rhode Island Reds are the most curious and they also seem to enjoy human company the most. One actually follows me all around the yard the entire time I am out there and is up on the arm of the chair as soon as I sit down.

Orpington are supposed to be "lap chickens". One of ours is very docile and tolerant, but I would not call her friendly and the other one has a skittish "the sky is falling" personality. For some reason she is my husband favorite!

I love my EE, I Had one in the past who would fly up on my sholder when called. Also had a red sex link who was very friendly. My kids (7 and 10) and myself handle the chicks from when they are a few days old on a daily basis. I think that helps to keep them friendly and used to being handled. Makes it easy when you need to check them over. So far the baby EE and all the black one are the calmest, they come right over to be picked up and will sleep in our hands.
