what do quail need??

I put a covered wooden "box" in for my quail to nest in. They lay eggs in the dusting container - or - they dig into the shavings and make little nests and lay in them - or - sometimes they just lay an egg in the middle of the pen... never in the covered nest area.

ETA: My cortunix have stopped laying for the season. My buttons are laying, but they're inside where it's warm. The quail you get may not lay at first due to the colder weather and stress of a new environment.

It really depends on the species.
My coturnix drop eggs where ever they happen to be. If their eggs were sticky, I would find them on the roof of the pen.
It really depends on where they are when they decide to crank one out.

Our coturnix drop them wherever they want....i especially like it when they have them right beside the door and I have to catch an egg as I'm opening the door before it hits the floor....Kristi

I have a nesting box for my Coturnix and the majority of eggs are laid in there but like everyone has said they will lay where they want too. Button quail like to pick a spot they feel safe. If they have a fake plant to lay eggs under they will usually do that before laying in the open.

That would be choice for me. Though I would miss the Easter egg hunt they like to send me on. Ever seen an egg in the food bin...there you go.
Egg in water...there you go. I just thank my upright walking God, that they are not sticky because they would be on the roof.
