If chickens can scratch at the roots of something, they will eventually kill it. Having wire over the top of the grass prevents access to the roots--they can only peck at what grows through the wire and what they can reach through the wire. If you wanted to grow something like lettuce, you might make a box that is deeper so that a larger portion of the plant can escape damage by the chooks.

M Y husband finds out I do a garden for them and not him..he's going to be one mad man...lma

My hubby isn't thrilled with my idea of a garden for them either, (as I can't grow anything for us)... I want to put stuff in that they can't get their little feet in and destroy... I have bantams and then can get in the smallest places. I'm going to put my boxoes together this weekend... and put them in the upstairs back bedroom (so they have to be manageable...) and start the growing process. Still too cold for outside growning. Figure by the time the new run is complete, will have a couple nice gardens ready for them...

Good idea, I always start about now, under lights then take out to the ground..when I do gardens..I just haven't done one in two years, it was an awesome garden..I still have lettuce growing up each summer still...lol

And planted basil, and it took over, pumpkins, sweet peas, cucumbers , tomatoes, warermelon, melons, potatoes, etc

So much work weeding..lol

The past two years I got two huge barrels and just did my tomatoes that way

Maybe I will do a few barrels..two for me and a barrel covered for the chickens..they can jump right up into it if they want something..

Oh and this year, iam going to throw watermelon seeds and melons just right in the ground and then plant in two barrels cucumbers and tomatoes

And then..the other barrel a bunch of mis match for the chickens..and keep that barrel in their run

not to sound too dumb, but I get the use of wire on top of the grass so they can walk on it and not tear it up, but Im missing something on the basket? I couldnt really see that in the pic. I would LOVE to have my run look like that! Can someone please explain this?
