What do YOU have in your run for the chickens to "play" with.

I'd love to put some things in their run for them. I already plan on making a perch for them but am curious what other people put in theirs. i know we have some very creative people on here, so I can't wait to hear what your chicks get to "play" with.

I have an area in the back with play sand so they can "bath" in it as they please, also I have a couple of hanging suet feeders (large)that I put broccoli in and they just love to peck at it all day if I am unable to let them free range.

I have a simple birch branch roost, dusted with DE, of course.........it's about 5 feet long, supported by very simple,
but sturdy, scrap 2 x 4 "X"'s at each end. Also, have a large, flat stone.........1/2 buried in the soil.........kind-of upright, like
a tomestone........for them to roost on. Some hanging CD's............they like to peck at shiny things! A hanging basket, for
cabbage, veggies, etc..............so they have to 'jump' a little to reach. About once a week I let about 4 or 5 dozen small crickets
loose (scattered all over the run)......................OMG, they LOVE crickets!!!!!! Same with mealworms.....scattered, once or twice
a week. I also have an inexpensive mirror in one corner of the run (propped up in the corner....) and some of the girls
like to peck at their reflection! (Silly birds!!) Oh, and fresh grass clipping when I mow................they eat it, scratch around in it, etc!
That's about it, til they're old enough to free-range...............and they seem like happy chickens to me!!

ooo I would like to hear suggestions also! I was actually thinking about a rubber ball? like the size of a kick ball. One of my chickens was playing with a plastic cup, pecking at it, but then ir rolled back at her and she jumped back...so I'm not sure they may just be afraid of it

We have a very large shallow pot with sand with a little DE for dusting and several large rocks and a couple cinder blocks. Once a week or so I will move the rocks so they can get to new bugs and worms.

Mine love that too ~ We have a 3' long piece of railroad tie that we turn over every few days for them to peck up all the goodies underneath. And a big tree limb that they play on and an overturned tub that we rotate around the yard so they can scratch up everything that tries to hide underneath. Why are they so fun to watch?

gabby3535,

What lucky chickens you have! I've paid for my kids to go to summer camps with less to entertain them.

Mine like the little balls from the kiddie thing at McDonalds, especially the orange & red ones! Sometimes it looks like they are playing soccer with them.

Each other. Chickens dont "play," as we think of it.
