What do you recommend?

I would really like a new variety of chicken for our backyard farm. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations as to which birds are unique in look and behavior, but still friendly towards children.

Any special climate considerations ? Cold hot ect. My daughter is 8 and we have had birds since she was 4. Our Sussex are great, Kaylee caries the enormous roos around. Cochins are very kids friendly, the Swedish flowers are great.
Look in some books and see what appeals to you . I love stories illustrated guide to poultry breeds. Just remember there are exceptions in every breed. Chickens can't read

We are in the midwest like you are, so i have about the same temps.
which color sussex do you have, when i researched i got several types.
